COACHING APPOINTMENTS 2012
SEASON
The Sumner
Rugby Club recently announced its coaching appointments for the 2012 season,
with former All Black Scott ‘Razor’ Robertson and backs coach Reece Allen both
returning for another year at the helm of the Division One squad. Robertson and
Allen will be assisted by a host of specialist trainers, including some of the
regions most esteemed and well-known coaches.
Working closely with the Senior side, the
Division Two squad will be under the tutelage of Barry McLaughlin and Robbie
Timo, who will continue to add to his 300-plus games in the blue and black
whilst stepping in to the mentoring role.
After a season full of challenges for the club,
2012 looms as a chance for the players, management and coaching staff to set the
record straight, and the fact the club will also celebrate its 125th
Jubilee during the season only reiterates the importance of the coming months.
With recruitment well underway, and the bulk of
the 2011 squad returning for another season, the future of Sumner Rugby looks
healthy, while the attendance at pre-season training reflects the enthusiasm of
all involved.
The 125th Jubilee will be officially
celebrated over the weekend of the 27th – 29th April, and
will feature a match between former club members and a number of well-known
Canterbury players, a family day, and a formal evening. More details will follow
in the new year.
The Junior Club has just
released its registration dates for 2012, which will be held on Sunday
4th March, 10am – Midday, Tuesday 6th March, 4pm – 6pm
(featuring visiting Crusaders players and a BBQ), and Tuesday 13 March, again
from 4pm to 6pm.

Sumner wing Ben Richdale
(pictured above) never dreamed his 100thmatch for the club
would be in Metro club rugbys top flight.
The slightly-built winger achieved
the milestone on home turf against High School Old Boys yesterday, but
said after the game he had hoped for a better result than the 66-13
loss.Despite the outcome, Richdale said playing
100 games for Sumner meant everything. Its an
awesome club, an awesome community and Im proud to be a Sumner man, he
said.Ive played my junior footy here since I was
five, and the only two teams Ive played for in my life are Sumner and
Christchurch Boys, so it was quite nice playing my 100thagainst
HSOB.When Richdale rejoined the club after school,
the seniors were struggling near the bottom of division two.He said playing in division one at that time was far from his
thoughts.A few good players turned up and year
after year we started climbing the ladder. Then, after a couple of
unbeaten seasons, we were up into the big time.We
were ready for the step up and I think the club showed that last
year. After an impressive 2010, the side has
struggled this year, with just one win.We had a
good year last year and this year weve lost a lot of older players. Its a
rebuilding year, with probably half the team under the age of 21, Richdale
said. Its a young team so hopefully after a year or
two well be back up there. The coaching input of
his neighbour, former All Blacks flanker Scott Robertson, was among the
reasons for Sumner improved fortunes, he said. Its really good having
Razor on board. He brings a lot to the club.Richdale has little time to savour his achievement, or to add
to his 100 caps, as he heads to London on his OE in two
weeks.
However, he is determined to don Sumner
colours in the future |

Sumner Rugby Gala and Prizegiving 2010
The Sumner Rugby club finished what has been an historic season with the inaugural Gala Dinner and Awards Night, held at the Addington Racecourses Silks Room. The night was not only a chance to recognise the outstanding players,
but also an opportunity for the Junior and Senior clubs to get together and reflect on another highly successful year of club footy.
Awards
Evergreen hooker and all-round inspiration, (on and off the field) Greg Digby was named Sharks Player of the Year, while Nick Macdonald took out Back of the Year, Lionel Tattersall Forward of the Year, and Heath Wallace the
prize for Most Improved.
Rob Macann was a thoroughly deserving recipient of the Division 3 Depth Chargers Player of the Year award, with Cam Stevens (Back), Richard Clark (Forward) and Guy Gillman (Most Improved) also carrying off trophies.
The Wave Division 2 Player of the Year was industrious hooker Nigel Beardsley, while also recognised were Michael Cavanagh (Back), Gareth DAlmeida (Forward), and Michael Jones (Most Improved).
Hard hitting league convert Matt Fitzgeralds is the first name to appear on the Phil Laloli Cup for Division One MVP, as voted by the players throughout the season. Mark Chester was awarded the Back of the Year award, Tom
Gilmour the Forward of the Year prize, and Lawrence Babe the Wave Newcomer of the Year.
Division One player Reece McCaffrey won the Gordon Mitchell Cup for Top Try-scorer in the Senior Club, while Lawrence Babe picked up some more silverware, securing the Fat Boy Trophy as the senior clubs Best and Fairest
player.
Courageous leader Mark Bacon was the first recipient of the Robbie Timo Wave Player of the Year award, Scott Robertson won the Lloyd Douglas prize for Coach of the Year, Robin Digby took the Norm Fraser Supporter of the Year
award, and Tim Cronin was awarded the Wally Hanlon cup for Club Person of the Year.
The evening, which featured a 3 course meal, fundraising auction for the junior club, live music and of course, the formal Award ceremony was organised by Richie Dimbleby, and the success of the night ensures yet another new
tradition has been born this year.

HSOB 24 SUMNER 19
Guaranteed a finish in the top half of the table, the Waves final game in their inaugural season in the first division was against High School Old Boys in the Plate Final for 5th
place.
A massive contingent of supporters followed the Wave to Ascot Green for their last hit out, but it was Old Boys who started the stronger, enjoying the bulk of the early territory and possession.
Sumners defence was stoic on its line, particularly around the fringes, but they were powerless to stop a superbly executed cross field kick, gathered by the Old Boys winger.
7-nil down Sumner got stuck into their work, and field position eventually led to points, with Mark Chester knocking over two penalty goals. Evergreen leader Mark Bacon played a massive role in
putting Sumner on the front foot, making several telling breaks in open play. Ginho Haurua was similarly instrumental, his trademark power from the back of the scrum proving increasingly difficult to handle.
With Chesters kicking boots on form Sumner eventually took the lead, his 4th successful shot at goal sending the Wave to the break up 12-7.
Sumner started the second spell in fine fashion, showing a willingness to try and stretch their opposition. The tactic paid off early on, when they spread the ball to the left flank and into the
hands of Marc Pringle. With plenty of work still to do, Pringle tip-toed down the sideline, stepped inside the first cover defender, and power over in the tackle of the second for Sumners first try of the encounter. Chesters superb sideline conversion gave Sumner a handy 19-7 lead.
Old Boys fought back into the game, a penalty and an unconverted try getting them within striking distance. Some decisive substitutions by Old Boys saw them well equipped to control the game, and
the pressure kept mounting on the Sumner defence, which in turn, inevitably, led to penalties being conceded.
Accurate goal kicking netted Old Boys a further nine points, and while Sumner tried desperately to gain possession and create a scoring opportunity in the dying moments they were unable to get
over the line, the 24-19 final scoreline a fair reflection of a tightly contested battle.
While the loss, Sumners first in over two months, was not the note the boys wanted to finish on, their placing in the top half of the ladder undoubtedly signals a highly credible debut season in
the top flight. At the Gale Dinner and Awards Night on Saturday Matt Fitzgerald was the first recipient of the Phil Laloli Trophy for Division One MVP, while Mark Bacons is the first name to appear on the Robbie Timo Trophy for Wave Man of the Year. Tom Gilmour was the sides forward of the year,
Mark Chester was back of the year, and Lawrence Babe was Wave Newcomer of the Year. Reece McCaffrey took out the prize for top team try scorer, and top try scorer amongst all teams in the Senior club.

enthusiastic attitudes to the game and each other and are really into chasing
and ripping and of course scoring a try! Coaches Brad, Rachel and Ashley have
the lucky responsibility of developing the skills of these Perky Penguins
further together with the management of Jane. So far the

Tsunamis

The Sumner Under 6
Tsunamis team are a force to be reckoned with. A brilliant bunch of
boys, their enthusiasm to learn and team spirit is relentless. They are led by two intrepid coaches and
followed by a biased gaggle of passionate parent supporters. Mouth guards
and laughter are compulsory at training and matches.
The team consists of Alex Barker, Tom
Barker, Elijah Butts, Jade Harrison, George Hudson, Flynn Hunter, Billy
McLoughlin, Cameron Murray, Blake Theobald, Louis Wells and Charlie Wise. They
range in size and age but everyone has a part to play, the smaller guys often
demonstrating that size isnt everything!
With only one player with previous experience our fearless
coach Andrew Barker has taken on the challenge willingly. The teams progress has
been really good. From early days Andrew has nurtured a team mentality, learning
each others names before the parents had even pondered what they had let
themselves in for. They quickly learnt to chase the guy with the ball and are
already heading into serious tactics. Andrews goals for the team are primarily
enjoyment and physical activity in general. Along the way he aims for them to
gain a good grounding of basic skills that will enable them to progress with the
game of rugby.
We are very fortunate to have the assistant coaching
skills of Ben Southland, (U15) who attends all the training sessions and the
matches, a real role model for the Tsunamis players, and a son to dream of for
the parents.
So far this season 3 wins, 2 draws, 1
loss, 1000s of smiles.

Apart from two newbies this the teams second

lucky, draws last year to a so far unbeaten season this year! The boys are
really enjoying playing Ripper rugby after last years touch. This year we
have a new coach too, Jess Ford, who the boys have responded very well
too! The Minnows are concentrating on working on their Defence and
beginning to understand that it is just as important as scoring those sort after

The
Super Sumner Dories are a group of awesome future Crusaders who have mostly
fairly recently turned 5. All except for mighty Monty who is still 3! We have a
good mix of boys who have a season of touch under their belts with boys new to
the team. Todd Blackadder's understudies, with the responsibility of moulding
this great team, are Callum, Chris and Wal. These guys do a great job in
ensuring the boys learn new skills, become mates, participate, be proud of the
club, put in the odd tackle (it's ripper!), and have fun while going for the
win! We are currently lulling the other teams into a false sense of security,
and are soon to unleash the full fury of the Dories. Watch this

DIV 1 WAVE 25 V NEW BRIGHTON
17
Club day finally rolled around at St
Leonards as the Wave hosted New Brighton in the Battle of the Beaches. The
inclusion of halfback Justin Marshall in the Wave team was an obvious lift to
the boys, and the bumper crowd was in a buoyant mood all
day.
The home side started with passion
and enthusiasm, and it was flanker Tom Gilmour who scored the first points of
the clash, crossing for his fourth try of the season. Mark Chester converted and
the Wave was off to a good start.
Brighton warmed into their work and
were the next to post points, before the Wave answered with another of their
own, Shane Cowles scoring from a perfectly executed lineout move in a carbon
copy of his five-pointer against Old Boys the week
before.
Chesters accurate boot saw the hosts ahead 15-5 before
James Short, in his last outing before heading home, crossed for Sumners third
try of the half.
Leading 22-5 at the start of the
second spell Chester soon increased the margin to 25-5. However these were to be
the last points the Wave scored as Brighton fought bravely and edged back into
the game, scoring two more tries themselves. The difference at the end of the
day lay with the goal kickers as Brightons pivot David Cattermole failed to
capitalise on several opportunities.
Sumner held on to prevail 25-17,
their eighth win on the trot and their first in Division One against their
sea-side rivals. The match was marred somewhat by the potentially career-ending
injury to Brighton stalwart Jamyn Keats, who again broke his arm. The Sumner man
of the match was barn-storming Number 8 Ginho Haurua, whose power from the back
of the scrum and his uncompromising defence were crucial to putting the Wave on
the front foot. Sumner are now guaranteed a finish in the top half of the
competition, undoubtedly exceeding all expectations in their inaugural year in
the top flight while Brighton end their season bottom of the middle 4, having
failing to carry on from an unbeaten run through the first round of the season.
This week the Wave face High School Old Boys for the third time this year, to
decide 5th and 6th places. With only one point separating the teams
in both matches previously the game is sure to be a keenly contested
one.
31 July 2010
The Wave were at
home again on the weekend, and were aiming to keep their momentum going by
securing their seventh consecutive victory. Their opponents were Varsity, whom
they defeated earlier in the competition 26-23, but the bonus point the students
earned that day was enough to push them into the top six for round two, and
subsequently deny Sumner a spot.
The energy of Mark
Chester, returned after 4 games away, was immediately evident, and the home side
started with vigour and enthusiasm. While both teams looked to play an
enterprising brand of football, it was Sumner who made the first break-through
when Openside flanker Tom Gilmour displayed his soccer skills, toeing the ball
through for the first points of the match.
Fellow Englishman
James Short, the thorn in Varsitys side the last time the two sides met, then
increased the lead, running around under the posts and making Chesters
goal-kicking duties that much easier. Varsitys only points of the half came from
the ever-reliable boot of first-five Adam Catchpole, whose two coolly taken
penalty shots made the halftime score 14-6.
The match failed
to turn into the free-flowing affair that the first half had suggested, with the
visitors dominating possession, but the Waves resolute defence doing its job.
Both teams were reduced to 14 men after a halfway scuffle, the binning of Sumner
prop Alex Brown presenting the opportunity for Tyrone Smith to make his 1st Division debut.
Chester increased
Sumners lead to 17-6, but it was Varsity who posted the final score, their
persistence finally paying off with a couple of minutes remaining as they
crossed for their sole try of the afternoon.
Scotsman Craig
Keddie earned a well deserved appearance off the bench as the Sumner side ground
out the last few minutes and kept their unbeaten streak alive. Man of the match
was Gilmour, while Captain Mark Bacon and lock Lawrence Babe were the
runners-up.
Next week is club
day at St Leonards, and the Wave face arch rivals New Brighton in the battle of
the Beaches. After narrowly losing in round one, Sumner will relish the
opportunity to host Brighton, while the visitors motivation will be driven by a
desire to get their season back on track. The match kicks off at St
Leonards Square at 2:45pm.
24th
July
The Wave played High School Old Boys this week, in the
final match of Round Two. With both teams having secured a spot in the middle
four play-offs, there was nothing tangible at stake, but Sumner placed great
importance on maintaining the momentum they had created by winning their last
five games on the trot.
Unfortunately the field conditions dictated the style of
game, as they look set to for the remainder of the year. Old Boys dominated the
early stages of the match, competing strongly at, and perhaps getting the better
of, the set piece battle. The referee set a staunch standard early, and accurate
goal kicking saw Old Boys take a six nil lead.
Then, somewhat against the run of play, electric Englishman
James Short produced one of his characteristic kick returns, slicing the Old
Boys defence into pieces and beating four or five defenders in the process
before off-loading to top try-scorer Reece McCaffrey. With plenty of work still
to do, McCaffrey first used his pace, then his strength to power over the line
for the games first, and his eighth, try of the season.
The rest of the half was much the same, Old Boys continuing
to have the majority of possession and territory, and the officials continuing
to be highly visible. Hamish Connell served a ten minute spell in the bin, but
the Wave held out the visitors during that stretch, only to concede another
three points just prior to the break.
Trailing 9-5 at half-time the coaches emphasised the fact
that the match would invariably be a battle of attrition. Some tight tussles in
similar conditions over the last few weeks meant the home side had experience in
such clashes, and the feeling amongst the boys was good as the second stanza
begun.
Old Boys extended their lead to 7 points with another
penalty, which was quickly negated by Marc Pringles first points of the match, a
well taken penalty shot which made the score 12-8. Perhaps a turning point in
the match was the sin-binning of the Old Boys first five, denying them the
services of an accurate kicker for ten minutes. Momentum shifted, with Sumner
beginning to experience more time in possession and enjoying periods of attack
in the opposition half. The break finally came when Sumner executed a sharp
lineout move. Having used it twice already, hooker Shane Cowles threw a snappy
ball to the very front of the lineout, which was promptly thrown back to him.
The bustling hooker took off down the sideline, his fleet footed, mountain-goat
run down the flank culminating in a head on collision with the Old Boys cover
defence. Cowles determination won out though, and the try was awarded in the
corner, the Wave taking the lead for the first time in the match with just three
minutes to go.
Up 13-12, the Wave clinically shut out the game, twice
winning pressure lineouts, retaining possession to wind down the clock, and
kicking intelligently. The final act of the match was an unseemly scuffle which
erupted when James Short was targeted, an Old Boys player being binned as a
result.
Shane Cowles was a deserved man of the match, while an
honorable mention must go to Michael Cavannagh, whose stand-out performance as a
stand-in halfback was a prominent feature of the Wave success. The win was
Sumners 6th in a row, and their 8th from 9 matches. They now play-off for 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th in another
round-robin, where they will be joined again by High School Old Boys, as well as
Varsity and New Brighton.
Side note As a result of the cancellation of a lot of games
on the weekend, Club Day was postponed, and will now by held in a fortnight, on
August 7th.
17th July
2010
After five consecutive games on the
road, the Wave finally returned to St Leonards Square for their clash against a
resurgent Belfast team. Having steadily improved over the course of the season,
and coming off two wins, Belfast promised to be tough opposition, while a win
for the home side would guarantee a spot in the middle four.
The first 30 minutes was a classic
arm-wrestle, with Belfast having the bulk of possession, but Sumners well
organised defence remaining staunch. The home side weathered a ten minute period
with fourteen men after the sin-binning of Matt Fitzgerald, who was also
celebrating his 50th appearance in Sumner
colours.
It was the Wave who were first to
capitalise on an opportunity, with top try scorer Reece McCaffrey showing both
his blistering pace and his keen instinct for the try-line with his 7th five-pointer of the year, sending Sumner to the
break with a 5-nil lead.
The second half saw the Wave kick
away. An early try to fullback Simon Mulholland gave the home team some
breathing space with a ten point lead, followed shortly after by Ginho Hauruas
first try of the season, successfully converted by Marc Pringle. Mulholland
crossed again not long after, and Sumner had blown out to a 24-nil
lead.
Belfast showed good heart to continue to
battle, and while Sumner looked determined to keep their tryline unbreached the
visitors managed to cross with five minutes remaining, just reward for a days
hard toil. Man of the match was unsurprisingly Mulholland, with honorable
mentions to halfback Phil Whyman and the ever dynamic Openside flanker Tom
Gilmour.
The win, Sumners fifth in a row,
ensures them a spot in the middle four, where they will be joined by HSOB (who
they face this week on club-day), University, and most probably New Brighton,
whose undefeated streak through Round One has been cancelled out by three loses
on the trot at the business end of the season. Sumner can finish no lower than
eighth, an effort many would have scoffed at pre-season. Sumner rugby farewells
American prop Tim Kenefic this weekend, who unfortunately has been forced to cut
his visit short (again!). Tims contribution to the Wave has been significant,
and he will be missed.
Depth Chargers
All of a sudden
we find ourselves nearing the end of another season, and what a season for
Sumner Rugby! TheDepth Chargers have had an unusual season so far, never losing
by more than 12 points but struggling at times to finish off teams we should
hammer! Towards the end of the first round the boys finally started to hit their
straps and recorded some solid wins to make the top 6. This was followed by some
'nearly' results giving us bonus points but not the wins we
wanted.
We finally
showed the rugby were capable of in the 2nd
half of the old boys game and carried that same
determination to Marist-Albion last weekend, recording a solid win against the
3rd placed team.
With the right results in other games and a win ourselves we could still see
ourselves playing in the top 4 playoffs for the final round. A real thanks to
all the players from Div2, Sharks and Colts who have made the effort to travel
to our games and help out (and keep me off the paddock!).

Colts Report
Things continue to progress well, even though
results on the pitch haven't been ideal. We have played a number quality sides this season, some with several NZ
underage representatives, and our players have undoubtedly learnt valuable lessons from the experience. The culture
within the side is strong, and we anticipate the bulk of oplayers returning to Sumner Rugby next
year.
Last week we faced Lincoln University, and while we
went down 24-7, there were still plenty of positives, with young Blair Anderson continuing to step up to the mark and
make an impression. This week we face CBHS at McCormakcs Bay, 2:45pm kickoff. Boys High will no doubt field a very
strong side, and as always our players are excited about the challenge ahead. As always a huge thank-you goes out to our
sponsors and supporters.

SUMNER 13 SHIRLEY 10
Saturday 10th July saw the
Wave playing their fifth consecutive match away from home, traveling to Burwood
Park for the much anticipated rematch with Shirley. In a clash highlighted by
the ties the two clubs share, the Wave started with no less than four ex-Shirley
players on the field, including Shane Cowles, Phil Whyman, stand-in skipper Ryan
Turner and Marc Pringle, who fittingly celebrated his 50th match.
While Sumner had anticipated a fast and impassioned start
from their hosts they were powerless to stop it, good vision from the Shirley
backline exploiting an overlap and allowing Rikki Tukaki to cross in the corner
for the first points of the match.
Ten minutes later it was dangerous centre Robbie Flynn who
set up Tukakis second try, and gave Shirley a ten-nil lead.
Sumner then began to edge back into the contest, their
clinical set-pieces a vital aspect of their ability to gain ground and retain
possession. Displaying a good degree of patience they opted to take shots at
goal when the chance arose, and two successful attempts from Pringles boot made
the score 10-6 when the whistle sounded for the break.
Determined to score early and break the spirit of Shirley
the Wave started in enterprising fashion, but the contest continue to be a
battle of attrition, and continuity was hard to find. Eventually it was lock
Lawrence Babe who barged over close to the posts for his first five-pointer of
the season, duly converted by Pringle.
The introduction of Nick Kimber provided fresh impetus to
the Sumner scrum, while debutant Matt Jones and the experienced Wal Frith added
steel to the Waves resolve. Solid defence was the trademark of the rest of the
Waves day out, some big hits around the fringes, clinical turn-overs by
outstanding flanker Tom Gilmour and the tradesman like work ethic of lock Matt
Fitzgerald proving the difference as the visitors ground out their fourth win in
a row, in the process maintaining Turners unblemished record wearing the Sumner
captains band.
Man of the Match was Fitzgerald, who now moves ot the top
of the Wave MVP standings. The boys finally return home this week, facing
Belfast at St Leonards, followed the week after by High School Old Boys, again
at home, on Club Day. A win against Belfast will guarantee a spot in the middle
four, and give the boys the opportunity to finish fifth in their debut year in
the top flight.
3RD JULY 2010
SUMNER 28 LINCOLN UNIVERSITY
18
The weather came to the
party for the first time in weeks, the sun shining brightly on a firm Rugby Park
pitch for the Waves clash with Lincoln University. With both sides fresh from
wins in their first matches of Round Two, it was a chance for both sides to take
another big step towards the crucial top two spots.
It was an evenly contested
beginning to the match, the country students showing willingness to play, but it
was Sumner who scored the first points of the contest, with former Lincoln
player Reece McCaffrey scampering away down the left flank after turn over ball
and some slick passing to score the first five pointer of the day. Marc Pringle
duly converted, and the Wave led 7-nil.
The rest of the half was a
bit of an arm wrestle, the only points coming from the boot, Pringle slotting
two penalties and Lincoln nailing one of their own. Sumner led 13-3 at the
break.
Momentum shifted firmly to
the students at the start of the second stanza, an early converted try and a
well taken penalty evening the scores and putting the players and their
supporters in a buoyant mood. Pringles third penalty of the day saw the lead
returned to Sumner, and some key substitutions, including the introduction of
coach Scott Robertson, injected some fresh enthusiasm into the Waves
game.
Shortly after that a well
executed lineout eventually resulted in Hamish Connell haring down the sideline
and scoring his first try of the season, pushing the Wave out to 21-13. The
loose forwards really began to assert their dominance, while outstanding lock
Matt Fitzgerald was devastating with ball in hand. Behind the scrum Phil Whyman
was sharp in his first match back from injury, while wing Simon Mulholland
looked dangerous at every opportunity.
The Wave rolled on, and
McCaffrey soon had his second of the match, running round under the bar for the
Waves last seven pointer. At 28-13 up the match looked secure, but the students
pressed on, scoring themselves immediately. That was all they had in them
though, the 28-18 score a relatively fair reflection of what was an open,
enterprising and enjoyable game to watch. Man of the Match was unsurprisingly
Fitzgerald.
Sumner face a big challenge
next week, traveling to Shirley. While Shirley never lacks motivation against
the Wave, this match has added importance after they suffered a second
consecutive defeat on Saturday. A win for the Wave would see them almost secure
in their bid for a top two finish, and would effectively end Shirleys season.
The match kicks off at Burwood Park at 2:45pm.

Sumner 11 Marist Albion
10
After the disappointment of
last week and narrowly missing qualification for the top six, this weeks match
at Middleton Park against Marist Albion was always going to be challenging, and
the conditions certainly didnt help. Housed in converted shipping containers due
to the lack of changing rooms at Marists ground, the preparation was less than
comfortable, while the playing surface itself was virtually a bog, ensuring the
match would be a battle of attrition.
Sumner started strongly,
controlling territory well, and maintaining possession by keeping the ball in
hand. The Wave scrum was dominant from the very early stages, while Mark
Chesters accurate kicking got the visitors out to a 6-0 lead.
The early and perhaps
questionable sin binning of Number 8 Ginho Haurua served only to galvanise the
Wave, who survived the ten minute period without conceding a point, only to turn
the ball over in the opposition half and watch Marist winger Chris Chrichton run
in a 60 metre counter attack.
Battling back the Wave
pounced on turn-over ball of their own, and some slick inter-passing, given the
conditions, led to Simon Mulholland scoring what was to be Sumners only try of
the contest. Unconverted, the five-pointer had the Wave leading 11-7 at the
break.
The second half was
essentially a battle to see who could retain position in the increasingly
slippery conditions. While both sides had their fair share of territory and
opportunities, it was the home side who spent the bulk of the time camped in the
Sumner 22. While they turned down several other earlier opportunities to close
the gap, they finally opted to kick for goal with about ten minutes remaining,
Matt Golding reducing the gap to one.
Sumner out-muscled Marist
for the remainder of the game, and while both sides continued to turn over
possession, Sumners dominant scrum and their decisive defence round the fringes
proved the difference, holding on to win the match 11-10.
Man of the match was Mark
Chester, who goes on a four week sabbatical now to get married in England. Next
week the Wave face Lincoln at Rugby Park, who started their campaign by
gate-crashing Shirleys club day party, winning 27-20 at Burwood
Park.
19TH June
2010
SUMNER WAVE 26 UNIVERSITY
23
It was a virtual final for
the Wave on Saturday, facing Varsity, the team that stood in their way in their
bid to make the top six. To qualify Sumner needed to beat Varsity, score a four
try bonus point, and deny them any points at all (from either scoring 4 tries
themselves, or by coming within 7 points of Sumner). As usual the Wave had the
bulk of the support, the supporters bus having made the trip to Ilam fields,
providing vocal backing for the visitors.
After an early penalty to
Varsity, an impassioned Wave side poured on the pressure, and after a ten minute
period of concerted pressure it was Tasman NPC-bound hooker Francis Smith who
opened the account for the visitors, dotting down under the bar. The ensuing
conversion from the boot of Mark Chester gave Sumner a 7-3 lead.
There was a certain sense
of de ja vu about the match, with Sumner playing against a pin-point accurate
kicker for the second week in a row, and it was Varsity first-five Adam
Catchpole who closed the gap to a point with his second penalty.
Sumner continued to play
with confidence and endeavour, and Captain Mark Bacons decision to turn down
shots at goal in favour of kicking for touch and having a crack soon paid off
when Matt Fitzgerald barged over for his fourth try of the season. Chesters
conversion extended the lead to 14-6, which was quickly whittled down again when
Varsity scored from open play.
It appeared as though 14-11
would be the score at halftime, but lightning fast fullback James Short had
different ideas. A scintillating kick return, in which he beat four or five
players, combined with some slick inter-passing and some great support play led
to Reece McCaffrey crossing in the corner, and the Wave taking a 19-11 lead into
the break.
Two early penalties at the
start of the second stanza had Varsity back in touch, but midway through the
half it was McCaffreys second five pointer that earned the Wave that vital
four-try bonus. The equation now was simple win by more than 7.
In a fluid and captivating
match both teams were willing to push the passes and attack from any area, and
there were numerous line breaks. An unconverted try from Uni had them within 6,
and required Sumner to score again, but it was Catchpoles final penalty of the
day that really threw the spanner in the works. Leading by just three points
with 5 minutes to go, Sumner needed a try to secure their prize, but, despite a
courageous effort, were unable to hang on to the ball and make the necessary
break.
Man of the match was
unsurprisingly James Short, whose speed, strength and vision mark him as perhaps
the most potent attacking weapon in the competition. At the end of the day it
was a great performance and another superb win for the Division One debutants,
but a frustrating day also, knowing they won more games than they lost, but
missed out on the top six primarily because of bonus points. Last minute tries
to Brighton, Burnside and Christchurch all denied the Wave vital points, but the
challenge now is to finish fifth. Sumner are grouped with Shirley, Old
Boys, Lincoln, Belfast and Marist-Albion, all teams they have beaten already
this season, and must finish in the top two of this faze of the competition in
order to make the middle group of four and contest the fifth place
finish.
With one half of the coaching team away, injuries ruling
out several key players, and a clash looming against the reigning champions
Christchurch, the whole week had that feeling that, with their backs against the
wall, now was the perfect opportunity to cause an upset.
After two great training sessions and the instigation of a
specific plan to try and ambush Christchurch, the Wave were primed for their
most important game of the season to date. They started strongly, James Shorts
enterprising run from the kickoff providing the field position that led to Matt
Fitzgerald driving over for the first try of the game, and an early lead for the
underdogs. Shortly afterwards Sam Stanley continued his fantastic kicking form,
nudging over a penalty to increase the visitors lead to 8.
The scrums were proving to be a tight tussle, and while
Christchurch werent as physically impressive as several other opponents Sumner
had faced this year, they were certainly clinical in all they did. That accuracy
led to Christchurch scoring their first try of the game, which was duly
converted from the sideline by their first five, who, it turned out, would play
a monster role with his boot for the entire game.
8-7 up, the Wave refused to be intimidated by the
credentials of their opposition, and Stanley soon increased the visitors tally
to 11. However, persistent pressure led to Christchurch scoring a try just prior
to the break, again converted from the sideline, to send them to oranges with a
14-11 lead.
Sumner pushed the pace at the start of the second spell,
and were rewarded for their patient, concerted attack when Mark Chester scurried
round the fringes and dotted down under the posts. Having taking the kicking
duties form the now injured Stanley, Chesters conversion of his own try had the
lead back out to 4.
Christchurch showed their experience in remaining calm in
the face of the impassioned Wave side, and swooped on any opportunity. A couple
of small errors at lineout time, several periods of sustained pressure, and a
booming 55 m drop goal saw the home side take the lead, before a penalty from
Chester got the Wave back in touch, trailing 27-21.
With just over 6 minutes on the clock, a stunning 60m break
for Sumner fullback James Short was cut down just metres from the line, and
while the field position was promising the Wave were unable to convert it to
points, and their last true opportunity went begging.
It was de ja vu at the death, Sumner losing the right to a
bonus point when Christchurch scored on the buzzer, the missed conversion their
kickers first blip of the day. Man of the match for Sumner was Mark Chester,
while Openside flanker Tom Gilmour, fullback James Short and Captain Mark Bacon
were tied as runners-up. It was a frustrating day for Sumner, who gave it their
all and were on the wrong side of some tight refereeing calls, but nevertheless
another day where the newly promoted sea-siders showed they could foot it with
the very best the competition has to offer.
The loss leaves Sumner with a simple equation going in to
this Saturdays final game of round one beat Varsity, secure a 4 try bonus point,
and deny them any points at all, and the Wave make the top six in their first
year. The match kicks off at Ilam Fields at 2:45pm.
21st May 2010
It has been a critical fortnight for the Wave in their Div
One campaign, with three matches against opponents near them on the twelve team
table, while Wave Two continue to throw it in the faces of those who suggested
their strangle hold on the title had ended.
22 May saw both teams head to Burnside Park.
Burnside was unbeaten in Div Two going into the clash, and a tight tussle
ensued, Sumner coming out on top 21-20. In the second game the Wave faced a side
one place ahead of it on the table. Burnside has been one of the more successful
sides of the last decade, and while currently going through a rebuilding faze
are still an experienced team. In a somewhat dour game the home team scored on
the buzzer to deny the Wave a bonus point, Burnside winning 28-19. The highlight
of the match was English import James Short, who scored one of the greatest
tries the sideline could remember seeing!
Dreadful weather in the garden city saw all but
Div One cancelled the following week, and even then the game was shifted, the
Wave facing High School Old Boys in Rolleston. In a typical wet weather battle
Sumner grinded out an historical victory over one of Christchurchs traditionally
dominant clubs, sustaining a second half onslaught to emerge 11-6 winners.
Halfback James Ferguson was man of the match in his last appearance in the Blue
and Black before heading back to the West
Coast.
Last weekend just been saw both teams back in
action. Wave Two played Marist Albion and thumped them, the 30 point winning
margin indicative of a dominant display, with man of the match Michael
Cavannaghs pace and insight to the fore.
Visiting St Leonards for the main game were Lincoln
Unniversity, complete with Crusaders Centre and former U19 World Player of the
Year Robbie Fruen. It was Fruens strength and penetration which catapulted
Lincoln to an early 10-nil lead, and from then on in the match became an
arm-wrestle, the lead see-sawing several times. The difference at the end of the
day was the laser-like accuracy of Sam Smoulder Stanleys boot, who kicked five
from five and led the Wave to an important 22-16 win. In doing so the Wave kept
themselves in the running for a top six play-off spot, with two round-robin
games remaining. This coming week they face reigning champions Christchurch at
Christchurch Park, where they will celebrate midfield stalwart Ryan Turners
100th appearance, before facing Unniversity away
in the last round. In Division Two the Wave sit third, just 2 points adrift from
the lead, and 4 in front of fourth placed Lyttleton.
21st April
2010
The time has arrived, and
the Sumner Wave has kicked off two major campaigns their entry into Division One
for the first time in the clubs history, and their bid to defend their Division
Two title.
A huge crowd massed at St
Leonard s Square for the season opener on April 10, where all Senior teams
played home matches. The Division Two Wave played Sydenham, and while it took
some time to wear the opposition down, eventually ran out bonus point victors,
with Scottish import Craig Keddie taking Player of the Day honours.
The feature match, Wave v
Sydenham Div One followed. The Sydenham side has been much talked about over the
off-season, and fielded no less that 12 players who had either represented
Canterbury at Senior level of who had represented New Zealand in underage sides.
Some of the more notable names were Tu Umaga Marshall and Rodney Ah You, both
who have been in the Canterbury NPC squad in recent years.
The Wave boys quickly
adapted to the pace and increased physicality of Division One, defending stoutly
and keeping themselves in touch.. Trailing 8-3 it was Sumner stalwart,
midfielder Ryan Turner who scored the clubs historic first-ever try, diving over
in the corner in classic league winger style. A try just before the break saw
Sydenham take a 15-8 lead, but the Wave again showed resolve and spirit in the
second stanza, and Francis Smiths try under the bar made the score 21-15 to the
visitors with 5 minutes to go. Sumners superior fitness was evident in the dying
moments as they launched attack after attack, but unfortunately were unable to
cross the line. They were brave in defeat though, and a bonus point, in their
first ever Division One outing, against a team with big raps and lots of names,
was a solid outcome.
Week two saw Div Two travel
to Burwood Park to face Shirley. Defending the Challenge Shield and an unbeaten
run of 41 games, the boys knew this would be no walk over. And so it proved.
Shirley played a tough, no frills game, and led going into the break. But the
Sumner side showed the resilience and never-say-die attitude that has earned
them so much silverware over the last two years to battle onwards, and tries to
Jake Waugh and Craig Keddie saw them prevail in the end, 23-15.
At Rugby Park the Div One
side faced Belfast . Div One wooden spooners for the last two years, Belfast
were unquestionably targeting the new-comers as a beatable side, while the
Sumner lads know this was their opportunity to get a win under their
belts.
The first half was a rugged
encounter. Belfast s grass-roots forwards toiled away, and an enterprising
first-five kept the Sumner defence on their toes. Belfast scored first, before
two Wave tries, each converted by former Leeds Premiership player Mark Chester
sent the Wave into the break 14-7 up.
The second half was all
blue and black. The Wave poured on the pressure, and Belfast buckled, their
forwards running out of steam and the backs out of imagination. Three second
half tries secured the bonus point, a final result of 41-7, and a glorious first
ever victory in div one. Try scorers were Francis Smith with a brace, and Mark
Bacon, James Ferguson and Sam Robinson, while Mark Chester nailed 7 from 8
attempts at goal. The match saw American Tim Kenefic and James Ferguson making
their run on debuts, and Sam Toy and Stephen List their first appearances in Div
One.
This week Div two face
Christchurch , while Div One plays Marist-Albion. Both matches are at St Leonard
s Square, the first beginning at 1pm , with the feature match to follow at
2:45pm . Crobar

You can hear the excitement in Metro chairman Murray
Withers voice when he talks about the season ahead. With 12 teams making up
Division 1 (including the introduction of the high-flying Sumner side) it is not
difficult to see where much of the focus will be on.Having 12 teams makes it
much easier with respect to scheduling and obviously makes for even
rounds.Essentially what it means is that we are able to have one full round of
matches (11 in all) before dividing in to top six and bottom six, Murray
says.Playing top six and bottom six will mean another five rounds, before the
sides separate into top, middle and bottom four. That will be another three
rounds before the finals in each section. In all there will be 20 rounds this
season, making for a mouth-watering smorgasbord of Division 1 rugby.
While the progress of Sumner will be
closely followed this season, there will be as much interest in the teams who
come out of the blocks strongest. There is no doubt that the traditionally strong
clubs will be there or thereabouts, although what will be really interesting is
the progress of the likes of University and Lincoln University, Murray says. Both
these clubs have retained their coaches and have a large number of their players
back this season. They are sure to be strong contenders this season.A feature of
this season is the strong retention of coaches within Division 1. It is a real
plus for the clubs concerned and the competition, Murray says. Players are more
enthusiastic to come back and play if the structure and the coaching remain
consistent.Division 1 kicks off on 10 April, with finals day on Sunday 22
August. There will be no night rounds this season (weather-permitting) and
Murray says this should be one of the best competitions in many seasons. There
are so many sides that could come through and cause a surprise.
What with Canterbury being Air New Zealand Cup
winners last season, the Crusaders doing well and the lure of the World Cup on
the horizon, we are expecting one of our most exciting seasons.Murray (who is in
his eighth season as Metro chairman) says all the reports he has received
suggest that pre-season training for the Division is going well and that the
players will be raring to go come April. The beauty of the Division 1 competition
is that not only is the standard of rugby constantly high, but it is also so
well-supported. Numbers on the sidelines continue to grow and that is very
encouraging for our sport.
The 12 Division 1 teams taking part this season are
Christchurch, High School Old Boys, Burnside, Sydenham, Linwood, New Brighton,
University, Lincoln University, Sumner, Belfast, Shirley and
Marist-Albion
Sumner
Strongman Competition
Attached are some pics from the first Sumner Strongman
competition, held at the Eastside Barbell Club, who we are stoked to be working
alongside and having our guys trained with for the upcoming season. For the
record Ben Richdale won the lightwieght catergory, Robbie Timo won the Seniors,
and Ryan Turner won the overall title .
SUMNER RUGBY 2010
The 2010 season is an
extremely exciting one for the Sumner Rugby Club, with their Seniors entering
the Division One competition for the first time in the clubs long history. The
club will field Senior sides in the Division One, Two and Three competitions, as
well as the world famous Sumner Sharks, competing in the Classics competition,
and an Under 20 side. The club has a very strong junior base, with 16 teams
entered this season.
COACHING STAFF
Last years Sumner Wave
coaches, Scott Robertson and John Tainui, return for another season at the helm,
and will be running the Wave as a large Div One / Div Two Squad. The teams will
train together on Tuesday nights, and will split on Thursday. The Div Two side
will be lead by head coach Reece Allen, a new addition, who will form an
integral part of the coaching team with John and Scott, and will be in charge of
the 2nd team on game days.
Scott Robertson Former All
Black, Crusader, and Tri-Nations Player of the Year, Razor has been the head
coach of the Sumner Wave for the last three years, although his involvement with
Sumner Rugby goes a lot further back. Having led the team to successive titles
and two unbeaten years in the Div Two competition, Scott believes the side has
the depth and structure to make the step up
John Tainui Playing Senior
Club rugby at the age of 18, JT is a well known face around the Canterbury rugby
scene. After an extremely successful professional career as a player in Japan,
and as a player/coach in Ireland, John has returned to New Zealand, and enjoyed
his first year with the Sumner Rugby Club by helping the Wave defend their
Division Two title.
Both John and Scott share a
goal of arming their players with the necessary skills, contacts and knowledge
to achieve whatever their rugby goals may be. They are confident that the Sumner
Rugby system is ideal for developing professional rugby players, and that their
innovative, forward thinking and contemporary approach to coaching will give
players the best chance to compete at the highest level in the modern game of
rugby as it exists today.
Reece Allen Reece has
joined the Sumner Club after a hugely successful year at the Sydenham club as
head coach of their Colts side. Alboy coached the team on an unbeaten run
through the season-proper, before seeing his boys stumble at the final hurdle.
Reeces open minded and skill-based approach to the game of rugby compliments
John and Scott perfectly, and will make for an ideal combination of skills and
knowledge in this years brains trust!
EASTSIDE BARBELL CLUB THE POWER BEHIND THE
WAVE!
This year the Sumner Rugby
Club has embarked on a relationship with the Eastside Barbell Club, a dedicated
Strength and power lifting gym in the central city. Eastside, a relatively new
facility in Christchurch, was developed by Craig McGuigan, Graeme Uden, and
several other fellow power lifters to provide a range of quality, sports
specific services to athletes. The Eastside team consists of numerous guys with
top qualifications as personal trainers, knowledge of sports physiology,
motivation and diet, many of whom possess impressive credentials in a wide range
of sporting fields.
FITNESS TRAINING
The Sumner Wave is lucky
enough to have procured the services of Greg Thompson, the 2009 fitness trainer
for the Canterbury Rugby team. Greg will be working alongside individual players
to tailor training plans to suit their specific needs and the requirements of
their positions, as well as formatting the fitness conditioning side of the
teams pre-season build-up.
TRAININGS
One of the aspects of
Sumner Rugby most appreciated by the players is the one hour time limit on
trainings! Scott and John believe the boys get more out of training intensely
for a shorter period of time, and the result are training sessions which are
short and sharp, focused, and productive. The contemporary coaching philosophy
adopted by the club sees the boys playing a wide variety of skill based games,
combining the fundamentals of rugby and fitness work with a big dose of fun and
a ton of variety.
Training sessions are held
at McCormacks Bay, situated about halfway between the Sumner Village and the
Christchurch city centre, ideally located for both players based in the village,
and those coming from different parts of the city.
SUMNER RUGBY ARCHIVE
.....2009
STAND PROUD, SUMNER RUGBY IS ALIVE AND
WELL

Saturday, 29 August 2009, was the final day of
competition in what has been another vintage year here at Sumner. For the second
year in a row all senior teams were involved in the finals of their respective
grades.
The Sharks had another year of mixed results
though their consistency improved as the season progressed. They met old foe,
Marist-Albion, in the Classics Plate Final at Middleton Park . Although they
managed to get out to an early lead they were unable to capitalize as they would
have liked and, unfortunately, let the home team back into the game. They
eventually went down 14-16 in a classic display of tight finals
footie.
Reaching the final, by itself, gave the Sharks
every reason to do what they do so well- party!!! And they still have their end
of season tour to look forward to.
The Div3 Depthcharges have had a real champagne
season. From the first game they have played with a determination and sense of
purpose that has not been quite so evident in the past. They finished the round
robin, which involved 2 complete rounds, third on the table. They convincingly
despatched Belfast in the semifinal, having lost both previous encounters.
This saw them into the CSB Trophy Final against top seed,
Christchurch.
Played at Christchurch Park , the Sumner team
had the wind advantage in the first half but this proved of little value in a
tight contest that saw them go to the halftime break with a nil-all
scoreline.
The turning point of the match came in the
second half when Christchurch were able to run in 2 quick tries as Sumner were
down to 14 men following an unfortunate sinbinning. The team fought on valiantly
to the end but was unable to recover going down 0-23.
It was another huge finals day at St Leonards
with the Sumner Wave making the Div2 CSB Canterbury Trophy Final for the third
year in a row. They completed the 2008 season without losing the game and
leading into the final they had preserved their un beaten record throughout
2009. Their success has made them the team to beat, in the grade, throughout the
year and they had consistently risen to the challenge.
The opposition was provided by University and
without doubt the two best teams in the competition were going to meet in the
final. Sumner had convincingly dealt to them early in the season but their
potential had been apparent. The team had seen the scarfies steady improvement,
as the competition proceeded, and new they would be up for a real challenge on
the day.
Whilst the game lacked some of the open free
running rugby that the team enjoys it was no less of a spectacle because of
that. It was true finals football with both team rising to the intensity such
occasions require. The patience, discipline and cast iron defence that have been
hallmarks of the team for the past three years came to the fore with a well
deserved 18-0 win.
The team added the CSB Div2 Canterbury Trophy to
the silverware they had already secured, this season; the CSB Div2 Canterbury
Cup, the Metro Div2 Challenge Shield, the Falton Shield (v New Brighton ), the
Morrie Wootton Challenge Cup (v Otautahi), the Golden Jandal (v Suburbs) and the
Winnie Bagoes Golden Slice (v HSOB).
With a crowd of 15-1800 on the sideline and
messages of support from Sumner supporters around the globe, the Club enjoyed a
festival atmosphere throughout the afternoon and well into the evening. The
strong community atmosphere that helps make Sumner such a special club was very
much to the fore. I have no hesitancy in saying that we put on a celebration of
grassroots rugby, at its best, that wouldnt be matched by any other club in the
city.
We have the final formalities of the season with
junior and senior prizegivings over the next couple of weeks. Already
preparations are underway to ensure next season is bigger and better. The Club
is growing and it is doing so because we have something to offer that many other
clubs lack. It is in all our interests to make sure that wherever we go in the
future we work to retain the values that make Sumner special. I think one of the
strengths of the club is that so many share that
sentiment.
The Club wishes to thank its main sponsors
Marine Bar and Backpackers, Strait Freight, Physiotherapy NZ, Winnie Bagoes,
Ross Richdale Plumbers, Okains Bay Seafoods and all the others who have made
such a valuable contribution to our success in 2009.
I would also like to say a big thank you to our
supporters both local and further afield. Sumner Rugby is quickly becoming an
international brotherhood (and sisterhood). This is a feature of the club from
which all who are involved take great strength. Long may it
continue.

JUNIOR CLUB
CAPTAIN(S) WANTED
After 3
½ years in the job I am resigning in November and the club needs a new person
(or people) to take on the role. The ideal person (or people),
will be completely disinterested in financial reward but will love the
opportunity to add value to the role as it currently stands as club captain(s)
for the fastest growing junior club in Christchurch. There are a few
options for dividing this role between two people, it could be divided between
ages/grades, or divided between admin and front person functions, or simply
between various stages during the year.
The
ideal person/people will:-
Love
rugby or at least the people involved in it.
Be
confident and capable of dealing with a wide cross-section of people including
parents, other committee members, and representatives from the CRFU in a range
of situations.
Have
good written communication skills.
Be a
great people manager.
This
role has been divided out somewhat in the last year or so and there is still
plenty of potential for further delegation and innovation to change and enhance
how things are run.
If
anyone is interested in knowing more about what is involved, a draft job
description is available; many of you will have been involved in parts of the
process and so will be quite familiar with the
job.
Anyone interested please contact

THE
JUNIOR TEAMS OF THE WEEK
THE SUMNER U11
MAKOS

The U11 Makos
started the grading games at the start of the season well and were put up to
Division 1 in a 3 division grade. All the games were going to be tough
particularly as we were a relatively small team when compared to some of the
competition we played (so much for weight grading!!!) One thing that can be said
about this team is that they had heart and never gave up in any of the games.
Games were lost by one or two tries and the team was never out of the games
until the final whistle. As an opposing coach told me after one particular game,
he thought our defence was the best he had come across this year. What the team
lacked in size they made up for in determination. The team played as a team and
put together some brilliant passages of rugby during the season. All the boys
got on well and it was great to see the development of skill amongst the
boys. They all supported each
other and I look forward to seeing them back ready to take on the opposition in
the U12 grade.
UNDER 11
TORPEDOES
Under 11
Torpedoes
The Torpedoes are an awesome and cool little
team. They had a bit of a shaky start with some players brand new to
rugby, a mix of players who didn't know each other, a false start with a coach
who got called back the the UK part way through the season. However, in
the second half of the season with new coaches Sam Toy and Blair Anderson,
things have really clicked into place and they ended up with some good wins,
their last two games were played with only 12 and 14 players respectively with
no subs, and yet still they held their own well. This will be a
great team to watch next year as they continue to evolve together as a
team.
William Webb Ellis first took the ball in his arms and ran
with it.....and so it has evolved
CRFU in conjunction with CBS held a "Dinner with Crusaders
Night"
left to right....Sam Moulson, Lucas Taylor, Dominic Taylor,
Nathan Moulson with Andy Ellis and Leon
McDonald.
The 2009
Season Is Off To A Flying Start
The season is
well under way, now, with the Sharks kicking off last week and the juniors
getting into the full swing after the recent school
break.
It is not
always obvious how much work is done behind the scenes, throughout the summer,
in preparation for the winter season. This year, however, concrete examples of
this effort can be seen in the new deck and the renovations to the showers and
visitors changing rooms.
The deck is
proving a very popular viewing platform. With the new stairwell it provides a
very welcoming entrance to the club for members and visitors alike. It has taken
a lot of pressure off the bar area and effectively doubled the size of the
clubrooms. This is but the first stage of clubroom developments that the Club
hopes to see underway as soon as possible. Planning and funding proposals are
well advanced.
The
improvements to the showers and changing rooms were well overdue. I would like
to thank our players for tolerating the less than desirable amenities for so
long. This, too, is a work in progress as we would like to see instant water
heating introduced to guarantee supply regardless of demand. Discussions with
the Pavilion Committee are currently addressing this
issue.
My appreciation
goes out to all the committee members who have worked so hard over the past two
years, and continue to do so, to make these dreams a
reality.
Having returned
as Club Captain, after three years away, it is gratifying to see the Club in
such good heart. I have been serving as the Clubs representative at all Metro
and CRFU during that period away. It has been fascinating to see the stir that
the Clubs recent performances have created in local rugby circles. It is fair to
say it has made me proud and a number of others uncomfortable. Good
one!
Last year we
said farewell to Terry Papps who had served on the committee, as Treasurer, for
six years. I wish Terry well and am sure we will still see him round the club on
occasions. The positions of chef de barbecue and chip fryer have also,
obviously, been left vacant.
The new Treasurer is Dean Rees. Dean has
already proved a valuable member of the management committee. I wish him the
best in the new role.
All senior
teams have good depth and I am confident they will continue the great form they
all demonstrated last season.
The junior club
has again achieved record numbers both in players registered and teams entered.
Congratulations to Di Taylor and her dedicated band of
helpers.
It was
unfortunate so many of the boys in the successful Colts team of last year
decided to play their footie elsewhere, for whatever reasons. We certainly tried
our hardest to continue but, unfortunately, fell just short of the numbers
required. I acknowledge the tremendous effort put in by Andy Toy. His
determination ensured the team was put together last year but, clearly, more was
needed to guarantee success again this time round. On the plus side the players
who have moved up from the Colts team are proving a valuable addition to our
senior player strength. Also, those players who stuck with us as we tried to
assemble the team, and have had to move to other clubs, have given us a
commitment to return, next year, as we try again to revive a Colts
team.
We are
expecting our traditional exchange of American visitors to arrive shortly. They
are currently making their final preparations and expect to be here early in
June. There will be up to four arrivals. I am sure that, as usual, they will
receive a great Sumner welcome and be made to feel at home here as soon as
possible. Our past success in administering this program has not gone unnoticed
outside the Club and assists in strengthening our case when arguing for
recognition in other areas of club rugby.
The Club could
not function as it does without the support of a generous and supportive band of
sponsors.
David Reid
Homes continue as the Clubs Premier sponsor. Kendalls contribution to both
senior and junior in the previous two years should not be underestimated. This
long term commitment also greatly assists the Club with its long term
planning.
Original
Platinum sponsors, Doc & Mel from Marine Bar & Backpackers, are back
along with DB Breweries. Graeme Rule, at Straitfreight has also joined this
group.
Welcome to
Mike, from Winnie Bagoes Ferrymead, and Greg, from OKains Bay Seafoods, who
along with Ross Richdale Plumbers and Elena, from PhysiotherapyNZ, provide team
and club support through their Gold sponsorship.
Many other
organizations provide assistance to the Club and my thanks goes out to all of
them.
As always I
encourage all our members to avail themselves of the services offered by our
sponsors whenever the opportunity presents
itself.
Thats all for now. I wish all members, young
and old, another fulfilling, exciting and enjoyable year of club rugby here at
Sumner.

a jump in demand for gear and i would like to thank everyone for their

are not to practice in playing gear.
Many of you who had AMI Referees at the weekend

SUMNER RUGBY LAUNCHES NEW ACADEMY

Sumner U18 Rugby Academy
and Sponsors
BACK ROW:
Matt Wood (Les Mills), Helen Barlow (Les Mills), Stacy Huiswaard, Scott Pore,
Paul Jansen, Chris Quigley, Brett Channings, Jude Coombs (NZPhysiotherapy),
Graham Rule (StraitFreight Ltd), Jeremy Claridge (Manager)
FRONT ROW:
Trevor Cogle (Head Coach), Mitchel Davison, Alex Abbott, Tyrone Toia, Josh Toy,
Jared Forbes,
Andre Van
Haandel (Absent)
This year Sumner Rugby has
introduced a Rugby Academy to develop the skills and abilities of young
players
who show considerable promise for
the future. The players are drawn from both previous Sumner Players and invited
players outside the club who , we believe , will benefit the future of rugby in
Sumner.
It is hoped the presence
of a Rugby Academy will
bring more players to Sumner Rugby. This year the Academy members will
all be drawn from the U18 Team which is now preparing for the coming
season. It is appropriate to thank the those Sponsors who have made
the creation of The Academy possible, David Reid Homes (as principal Club
Sponsor), Straitfreight, PhysiotherapyNZ and Les Mills. It is
also
necessary to acknowledge the time that has been put in
behind the scenes by Jeremy Claridge and those
that have helped him make this exciting new aspect to the
club possible.

On Saturday, 13 September, the Sumner Rugby Club concluded
its season with its annual senior prizegiving. This
brought to an end a couple of days of festivities
which had seen several prizegiving ceremonies for the various
junior grades. The Club also held an evening at the Marine
to thank the coaches and numerous volunteers who are
largely responsible for much of the success enjoyed
in recent years.
The results,
provided by the senior teams, made 2008 something of a vintage year. Whilst the
Club was always
confident that
its players were capable of achieving outstanding results on the field, the
results in the finals were
beyond even the
most avid fans expectations. Four senior teams, four finals, four
wins.
The Sharks had
an up and down season but rallied to meet their old foe, Marist-Albion, in the
Classics Plate Final.
Down on
the scoreboard at half time they called on their personal and Club pride to come
back with avengeance in
the
second half, securing a convincing win and setting the tone for the Clubs
successes later in the day.
The Div3 team
also came in under the radar to face off against Suburbs in the Plate Final. In
a tense and hard fought
battle
Sumner came out the victors and drew the first blood of the day at the Clubs
home venue, St Leonards.
A new team at
the Club this year, the Colts Under20, has provided entertaining, enterprising
football, all year. They
were
worthy finals competitors against the first round Pennant winners, Marist-Albion
A. Although the score, 11-10,
may not
suggest it the Sumner side dominated this game. Playing into a strong wind in
the first half the team put up a
strong defence
providing their opposition with little opportunity. In the second half Sumner
was unlucky not to rack up
more points
whilst a short period of lax defence allowed Marist-Albion back into the game.
However, courage and determination made Sumner the eventual victors and secured
the Colts Under20 Championship Trophy.
After last
years creditable, but disappointing, loss to Burnside in the Div2 final last
year, it was only fitting that the same
two teams
should confront each other again this year. Sumner controlled the game from the
start and showed why they
had
managed to come through the season unbeaten. The team demonstrated a composure
and discipline that come
from confidence
that, off field, the work has been done in preparation for the game. As a result
the team added the
Div2
Championship Trophy to the Canterbury Cup, the Falton Shield and the Morrie
Wootton Cup they won earlier in
the
season.
The Sumner
Rugby Club is proud of the achievements of all its teams, senior and junior, in
2008. They hope to
see everyone
back again next season to carry on the unprecedented success the Club is
currently enjoying. Special
thanks
are
offered to the sponsors, families and supporters who help make Sumner the best
playing environment
in the
city.

Latest Newsletter May 2009..
August 30th
2008
It
was a day described in superlatives, a day where clichés were frequently quoted,
a day perhaps most aptly described as the greatest day in the long history of
the Sumner Rugby Club.
Saturday, August 30th
produced ideal weather for Christchurchs smallest senior club, whose four senior
teams were all competing in finals. And just like the weather conditions the day
was to unfold in spectacular fashion.
At Hagley Park, both the Sumner Sharks, competing for
the Classics Plate, and the Sumner Colts, playing in the Div One final, kicked
off at 1pm, and by half past two the club had secured its first two titles of
the day, the Sharks getting home 27-10, while the Colts won an intense clash
11-8.
Back
in Sumner the Division Three Depth Chargers repelled Suburbs 22-5 to take the
Plate, and, as the crowds swelled and the atmosphere grew, the scene was set for
the clubs biggest match, its quest to win its first ever Division Two
Final.
With
an unbeaten record of 19-0 going into the match, the Sumner Wave were
unquestionably the favourites, but having lost the final last year to Burnside,
(their opponents again this year) the tension was palpable.
To
the roar of the locals, whos support through thick and thin has been unwavering
over the years, the two combatants took the field, and it was the home side who
drew first blood, left wing Ben Richdale on the end of some clinical passing,
crossing in the corner for the games first try. Former All White Glen Collins
nailed the tricky conversion, striking the ball low and hard, to set the scene
for the celebration of rugby that was to come.
25
minutes in, Matt Fitzgerald, the brute of the home sides forward pack, busted
numerous tackles, before offloading to fellow second rower Hayden Dench, whose
sleight of hand eventuated in Marc Pringle crossing in the corner to extend the
lead to 12-nil. Shortly before the break it was a bit of magic from Pringle, the
teams excitement machine, which created the games third five-pointer.
Slicing into the line at scintillating pace, he eventually unloaded to midfield
stalwart Ryan Turner, who, under pressure from the Burnside fullback,
sacrificed his body and slipped a ball to captain Mark Bacon, who in turn
sprinted the remaining thirty metres to dot down under the posts.
At 19
nil down, Burnside were under intense pressure to open the scoring in the second
half, but the defence of the Wave, the trade mark of their entire season, was as
staunch as ever, and it was the boot of Glen Collins which netted the first
return of the half, the penalty extending the score line to 22-0.
From
that point on the game was never in doubt, and the carnival atmosphere on the
sideline was symbolic of the passion the community holds for this rugby side.
With time up on the clock, it was Richdale who fittingly completed the scoring,
crossing in the corner, before Collins calmly slotted the conversion, and the
referee signalled the end of a historic season.
The jubilation was felt by all as the reserves and
management, as well as plenty of supporters, stormed the hallowed St Leonards
turf, and as the champagne flowed the club got to reflect on the amazing
achievements of 2008. In twenty games the Sumner Wave conceded just 97 points.
They won the first round trophy, retained the Maurie Wooten Memorial Cup, and
reclaimed the Fulton Shield in the Battle of the Beaches clash. Having lost
twice to Burnside last season, they played them three times this year, with the
final aggregate result 72 points to 6. Man of the match was inspirational leader
and the undoubted cornerstone of the team, Mark Bacon. Once the festivities are
finally concluded thoughts will turn to the exciting prospects for 2009, with
the bulk of the Seniors expected to return, and the championship winning Colts
side set to ensure the future of the club is indeed bright.

JUNIOR TEAM OF THE WEEK
Sumner U 7 STINGERS

Sumner Stingers
It
has been a great start to the season, and fantastic to see so many of last years
team turn out again this year, with a complement of new players who have moulded
into the team seamlessly. With 14 players it is
encouraging to see so many committed parents bringing their boys along to both
practices and matches and helping out so willingly. The boys and coaches are
still getting to grips with rippa rugby, but early season results are promising
and with some illusive runners and some sterling defensive play, their
determination shown at the weekends is bound to pay off . Yours Aye Tangerine Hat

Under 8 Seals
The boys have has a
fabulous start to the season, although it is early yet they are playing well and
remain unbeaten.
We have a few new players
in our team this year and we would like to welcome Quinn Lucas, Tyus Dimbleby,
Trent Breech and Thomas Andrews and their families to the Club.
Going from Rippa rugby to
tackle rugby has been a challenging task but they have all given it their 100%
and have taken to it like ducks to water. I have witnessed some amazing
running, superb tackling and dynamic dodging going on.
Special thanks have to go to our two
fantastic coaches Kerry Cox and Graham Whitaker. They are doing a fine job
and it is great to see how each week the boys just keep
improving.
Great to see all the
support of friends and family keep up all that noise on the side
line!!!!

SUMNER U8 WHALERS

The majority of this team has been playing
together for 3 seasons now so are getting a good handle on the team concept.
This year however is the first year of proper tackle rugby, so a whole range of
new skills are being learnt. Luckily the 2 coaches Jim Stenberg and Kelvin Back
are up with all the rules and have a great way of imparting their knowledge to
the kids.
The boys understandably are finding the much
longer halves and physicality of tackle rugby a real challenge, but all the U8
teams are in the same boat.
In saying that I can already see the extra
satisfaction on their faces when they put in a good tackle or manage to wriggle
out of one, something that wasnt really achievable in touch and ripper rugby.
They have played extremely well this year and myself and all the parents are
very proud of their efforts.

SUMNER U6 DOLPHINS

First off, I'd like
to introduce the U6 Dolphins for 2009: Rhys Brewer, Ben Chittock,
Olivia Digby, Sam Floyd, Flynn Greig, Max Hill, Oscar Kilpatrick, Connor &
Liam McSoriley, Brayden Phillips, Cass Robertson, William Sparrow and Lucas
Vine.
The U6 Dolphins have
all come together and jelled really well as a team. We have only played a
couple of games together, but they are doing so well. We haven't had many
wins, but the kids aren't worried about that, they are just having a great time
on the field. There are a couple of kids who are seasoned players (all of 1
year), so the rest of the team are new comers toRugby, but boy they have taken
to it like Ducks to water!! There's heaps of dodging the tags, and of course
running in the completely wrong direction - which is hilarious to watch, but
they are getting there and scoring tries. There's been lots of great tagging and
heaps of high fives when tries are scored! It's great to watch. The
parents have been fantastic and there's heaps of help from the sideline! So
thanks for that.
Dennis is going great
guns with the Coaching and we are lucky to also have Scott (Razor) Robertson as
Assistant Coach.
So looking forward to
a fun filled season. 1..2..3..DOLPHINS!!!

Young penguins assemble in large groups

it's a rugby team! Co-ordinating and instructing all these keen 4 & 5 yr olds may have felt initially
like herding cats for our coach, Craig Freeman,
but he's doing a fine job and the kids are loving
it. We've had 3 games so far, the first two won by default (no-shows although we found some other teams to play with)
and the third a narrow loss to our mates over the hill
in Lyttleton. Practice has been somewhat hampered by
grim weather, but that's water off a penguin's back?!

MINNOWS

The U6 Minnows have started their rugby
careers with a first up game against Burnside Red. It was as a hard fought
loss; however from a coachs one eyed point of view it did seem as if the scoring
was rather subjective. Rugby was certainly the winner on the day, with the
kids having a great time and trying fantastically hard to get their head around
a more organised playing game than they were used to during their kindergarten
days!
Congratulations to all the children and
parents that turned up for this inaugural event, and a special mention to
William Jamieson who was our player of the day and showed great form and speed
on defence and attack.
The Minnows under six team makes up for their
lack of experience (other than Finn Rutledge all other players are new on board
this season) with a real passion for wearing their uniforms and mouth
guards! Why none of the Rugby boot manufacturers have thought to come up
with Velcro boot fastenings yet is a surprise, and it is helpful that there is
no game stoppage to tie shoelaces.
For myself, as
a first time coach, it is also a learning experience and very amusing to watch
and participate in the organisation of the kids while trying to instil the game
plan. Our biggest challenge has been to get the ball off the child once they
have it in hand and to turn and pass the ball rather than try to throw it away
from their fellow team mates.
A quick thank
you to the Sumner Junior Rugby Manager and support team for all the helpful
information they have provided to get us up and running. As a past Sumner Rugby
club player it is great to see the effort that the club puts in to introducing
rugby to these junior grade teams.
So look out for
the Minnows team progress this season, we keep score as winning is our goal, and
our strategy will be to have lots of fun along they way!

SUMNER U6 SNAPPERS

The Snappers huddle at the end of
training
Lucas Boennic wins the Snapper Trainer of the Day
Trophy for best effort at training.
The U6
Snappers are ripping into the 2009 rugby season. A lot of the boys played
their first season of rugby in 2008, when most of them were around 4 years
old, so its all coming together for them a bit more this year! Everybody
is a lot more focussed on the ball and the opposing team, rather than planes
flying overhead/interesting dogs on the sideline/the Mr Whippy van
arriving&etc.
Everybody is taking their turn to run the ball up, falling
back when the other team has the ball, and running in the right direction to
score a try (most of the time, anyway!). Its great to see how much the
boys who played last year have remembered from that season, and how much more
focussed they are. Plus many of them seem to have grown about 5 inches,
and several of them have discovered really speedy running legs that they didnt
seem to have last year, so that all helps as well.
The
boys from last year have been joined by some additional friends from kindy and
school to make up a very active squad of 14. As most games are
seven-a-side, this means we have to be very organised with the subs, to make
sure everyone gets a good run. The new boys are just as keen as their more
experienced team mates and are quickly getting up to speed with the basics of
Under 6 touch rugby.
Also joining the team this year is their new coach, Jason
Robb. He is doing a fantastic job building great team spirit and getting
the boys focussed on learning their skills. Jason comes from a rugby
league background, with spells playing for Canterbury. He has coached
junior rugby league before, and is really enjoying this rugby
season. Jason organises two Player of the Day awards for the
team each week, as well as an award for the best effort at training, which is
helping keep the motivation levels high.
One
thing that hasnt changed from last year is the awesome parent support for the
team. The Snappers have had full sidelines of noisy parents cheering them
on for both games during this pre-season period, as well as at all the
practices. And each week a couple of parents play a key role in standing
on the try line, just to make sure the try-scorers are pointing in the right
direction when they cut a swathe through the opposition and bolt for the
line.
For the second pre-season game, all 14 boys turned up and
had a fantastic game, defeating Belfast Green by 9 tries to 7. The
Snappers were stoked with this result, and so were their parents. Players
of the Day were Ollie Back who scored the first try of his rugby career and
Zephyr Quartly, who had some great runs and scored three tries (to add to his
four tries last week). The other try scorers were Ollie Brittenden, Lachie
Irwin, Tom Carter, Thom Honeybone and Charlie Stenberg. And the whole
team did an awesome job of their defence, holding off Belfast several times only
metres from the try-line. Of course, glorious victories during the
pre-season grading could mean we have a tough season against the most
experienced U6 teams, however, the Snappers will definitely be up for the
challenge!
Anticipation as Betsy MacDonald awards
the Snapper Trainer of the Day trophy.
JuniClub Captains Report
(and
thanks for the season) Sept 2008
As Junior Club Captain, I would like to extend my heartfelt
thanks to the many, many people
who have stepped up this year and helped keep Junior Rugbygoing. Many
people are listed below as
having a specific role but in fact several have undertaken many tasks
and done so happily, if I thanked them
for every different task they undertook there would be people who would appear on my thank you list several
times over. We are a lucky club in that many of our teams have more
than two coaches and a manager. I acknowledge there are many
un-named parents who help out at practice or step in to lend a hand when there
is a BBQ cooking, handing out drinks or sausages etc and would like to
offer my thanks to them also. The list is endless, but I have
attempted here to list all my main contenders as they have put in many, many
hours each and it is very much appreciated.
It has been a great season for the club with many of our
junior teams fairing well in the standings at the end of the year. All of
our juniors are in the new lightweight fabric jerseys this year, (one of
the few clubs in Christchurchfrom what I could see this season); we have all our juniors
in smart new jackets thanks to our new Junior Sponsor Straitfreight.
Within the next
few weeks the first stage of our building project is underway. A big thank you goes
to all the parents who were in a position to donate their uniform bond money to
the club and chose to do so, this money will be earmarked to go toward the club
building fund which will hopefully see the new kids lounge open next year, (with
luck in time for the season but these things are a slowly evolving
process). We will let you know the total amount raised through this
exercise when we know the final figure.
Thanks to sponsors David
Reid Homes, Straitfreight, SBS Bank, OKains Bay Fisheries and Night and Day
Dairies, Brumbys Bakery.
We hope to see you all back next year. Changes
you will hopefully see upon your return will be online registrations and subscription payment
(fingers crossed), a start to the building project, hopefully even more club
members. A touch rugby tournament runs over summer and we are
looking at growing this for the kids, an email will come out letting people know
about this.
Good luck, have a great
summer. See you next season.
Kind
Regards
Di

SUMNER RUGBY LAUNCHES
NEW ACADEMY
This year
Sumner Rugby Club has introduced a Rugby Academy to develop the skills and
abilities of young players who show considerable promise for the future. The
players are drawn from both previous Sumner Rugby Players and invited players
from outside the club who, we believe, will benefit the future of rugby in
Sumner.
It is hoped
the presence of a Rugby Academy will bring more players to Sumner Rugby.
This year
the Academy members will all be drawn from the U18 Team which is now preparing
for the coming season. It is appropriate to thank the those Sponsors
who have made the creation of The Academy possible, David Reid Homes (as
principal Club Sponsor), Straitfreight, PhysiotherapyNZ and Les
Mills. It is also necessary to acknowledge the time that has been put in
behind the scenes by Jeremy Claridge and those that have helped him make this
exciting new aspect to the club possible.
The SumnerRugbyAcademyplayers list was announced on Sunday and
is as follows: Josh Toy, Mitchel Davison, Stacy Huiswaard, Chris
Quigley, Andre Van Haandel, Alex Abbott, Brett Channings, Paul Janson, Hugh
Miller and Tyrone Toia.
