Kia ora Sumner Whanau, We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Ron Burgess, age 93.
For those that didn't know, Ron was involved in our club for many years. This included; coaching junior teams (starting in 1965), he was then the secretary of the club from 1966 to 1968 and was the club's president in the years of 1971 and 1972.
Ron frequently reminisced on his days at the club, but amongst the memories, one stuck out from the rest. This was the first women's game of rugby at the Sumner Domain, whereby Ron was part of the organising committee and was proud in being involved on such a great day for Women, rugby and Sumner.
Ron was a devoted family man who was determined to never miss a game. Whether it be one of his five children, or his 11 grand-children, he would make sure he'd catch the game no matter the weather or circumstances.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Shirley and Ron's family at this time. The club and everyone involved with Sumner Rugby Club are grateful for the sacrifices and dedication made throughout the years.
A celebration of Ron Burgess' life will be held at the Sumner Bowls Club this Wednesday the 22nd of November at 1:00pm.
